Easy Graphics File Converter is for converting one or many graphics files from one format to another. The graphics file formats supported are GIF, JPG, BMP (Windows bitmap files) and PNG (Portable Network Graphics). Here is a typical screenshot:

This software allows you to do the following:

The reason why conversion to GIF images files is not supported is that Unisys Corporation (which acquired patents on the LZW algorithm used in GIF compression) adopted the policy of requiring any software developer marketing a program which creates GIF files to purchase a license. This is the main reason why the PNG image file format was developed.

The PNG format is comparatively new, but is supported by later versions of most browsers, allowing PNG images, in addition to the usual GIF and JPG images, to be displayed in web pages. Most of the images in the user manual are PNG images.

You can save an often-used configuration (the name and location of the folders for the input and output images) in a file (with .sta extension), and later restore it, using the usual Windows open/save dialog box. This is useful if you perform conversions often using the same input and output folders.

Note that the extension of a graphics file to be converted must be correct, because the file format used in conversion is taken from the file extension (so .jpeg files must be renamed as .jpg files). If a PNG file incorrectly has a .jpg extension (this has been known to happen) then an error will be reported.

Note also that this program cannot read .bmp files which are compressed (via run-length-encoding). If you don't know whether or not your .bmp files are compressed then try converting one of them with the trial version of this software.

Acknowledgements: The low-level graphics file conversion functions used in this software are a subset of the functions in Version 2.4 of Scott Heiman's BMGLib API for reading and saving BitMapped Graphics (BMG) on the Windows operating system. Scott Heiman writes:

BMGLib uses several open source libraries that I obtained from the Internet.  ... LibJPEG is an open source JPEG file format library that is distributed by the Independent JPEG Group (IJG). LibPNG is an open source PNG file format library supported by people who wanted an alternative to GIF. Long live the rebellion! The zlib library is an open source library for file compression. It is distributed by other closely allied rebels.  ... The LibUnGIF library is Eric Raymond's response to the Unisys LZW patent.
