Hermetic Stego
Using the Default Stego KeyYou may wish to hide a data file in a BMP file or a set of BMP files and send it to someone. (If there is more than one BMP file you can ZIP them up into one file before transmitting.) For full security you should specify a stego key and then transmit this separately and securely to the recipient by some means (such as could be done in a prior personal meeting).
But what if you can transmit the BMP file(s) but cannot transmit the stego key? In this case you can hide the data using the default stego key. This is a stego key selected by the program when the data file is hidden. When the recipient extracts the data from the BMP file(s) the recipient does not specify any stego key but allows the program to decide what the stego key is.
Clearly there is a security risk, since anyone who intercepts the BMP file(s), or gets hold of them later (if they are not deleted), can simply use this software to extract the data. In this case security, such as there is, lies in minimizing the chance that transmission of the BMP file(s) will arouse any interest (except by the intended recipient).
To hide a data file using the default stego key, or to extract one, simply follow the procedures described in the first section but do not specify a stego key. When hiding a data file the following dialog box appears:
Click on Yes to continue by using the default stego key.
When extracting a data file this dialog box also appears.
Note that in the trial version of this software a data file can be hidden only by using the default key. A key can be specified only after the software has been activated. A key can be specified when extracting data, whether the software is running in trial (or demo) mode or not.
