This software is for indexing — and subsequently searching quickly — text files, HTML files, XML files or files of a similar type in folders and their subfolders on a hard disk, memory stick, CD-ROM or similar storage medium. Note that this software does not act on MS-Word .doc files or Adobe .pdf files (which are binary files) or on HTML files on a server. It is for indexing and rapid searching of text files (or similar) on your PC or on CD-ROM, etc. (See also: Which files can be indexed (and searched)?)

This software does not simply create a list of files or simply search for character strings in a file. It indexes every word in every file, and any file containing a particular set of words (or any of those words, or an exact phrase) can be found by searching for those words (or that phrase).

Possible uses for this software:

  1. Searching a single file.
  2. Searching the source files of your website (on your PC).
  3. Searching the chapters of a book or the sections of a report.
  4. Searching the HTML files on a CD-ROM.
The first use is discussed in more detail in Indexing and Searching a Single File and the second in Indexing and Searching the Local Files of a Website.

Index Files Search Words consists of two integrated modules:

  1. An index module which is used to create an index of the searchable files.
  2. A search module which is used to search those files.

The index module is capable of indexing a hierarchy of over 1000 text or HTML files, totalling over 20 MB, and containing over 50,000 different words. Even with that number of different words the search module returns results in a few seconds. The results are displayed by the software and you can generate an HTML file which is automatically displayed in your default web browser (with links to the files containing the words searched for).

Here is an example of results returned (for a search on dynamic exponent):

Appendix 8: Relaxation Time and Singular Dynamic Scaling
... scaling Aeppli et al. found that the dynamic exponent Z for the relaxation time had a value close ...
... time ~ x Z eff where Z eff (the "effective dynamic exponent") = A(ln x T ) + B, with constant A and B . / ...

Footnotes
... the symbol q denotes only the new critical dynamic exponent, but sometimes here it is used to mean the ...

This software is mainly intended to be used to search for words and phrases in a set of files which is permanent or does not change much (though minor editing of the files will not affect performance and the set of searchable files can be moved).

It may also be used with a temporary set of files, in the sense that you might just want to search a particular set of HTML (or other text-like files) for a short time. If there are fewer than 100 files that you wish to search, containing fewer than 10,000 different words, then the index module will create an index file in about a minute and you can then search those files to obtain results as above.

To use this software it is not necessary to study a lengthy manual or follow flow charts. Its use is explained in just two web pages:

The Index Module   The Search Module

There is also a simplified, or "lite", version of this software which indexes and searches just a single file at one time. For more information see: Index Files Search Words Lite

System requirements: This software will run under all versions of the Windows operating system from Windows 98 to Windows 7 with at least 64 MB of RAM. Installation in each case requires about 3 MB of disk space. The sizes of the index and data files, which are produced by the index module and used by the search module, depend on the number of files indexed and the number of different words found in those files, and ranges from less than 40 KB to more than 40 MB.
